RUG HOOKING
in the Santa Clarita Valley
What is Rug Hooking, Anyway?
There are different types of rug hooking. Most people connect rug hooking to shag or latch hooked rugs. Remember,
THIS IS NOT LATCH HOOKING!
THESE ARE NOT SHAG RUGS!

The examples you see on this site are made using Primitive Rug Hooking methods…meaning they are made with a soft cotton (monks cloth) or linen backing, a traditional rug hook, and 100% wool fabric that has been cut into strips. They can also be made using yarn, which some rug hookers prefer.
Why Rug Hooking in the Santa Clarita Valley?
I’m on a mission. There are rug hookers all over Southern California – from San Diego to Santa Barbara and points East. The San Gabriel Valley is teeming with them. There’s a gaggle of them in Westlake and Agoura. The San Fernando Valley is overflowing. But Santa Clarita has, as far as I’ve been able to count, three, including myself. C’mon, SCVers, let’s get this party started!
This could be us!!!

Here's my plan (bwahahahaha). I'm putting together a beginner class to introduce this fun and fine craft to anyone who is interested in learning. I will provide the place, materials, intruction, and witty repartee. You will come away with a great memory, new friends, and a beautiful finished product you can show off to your family and acquaintances. If...and I'm betting you'll be hooked (yes, that's another benefit...you can be hooked on something good)...and want to go further with your instruction, I will arrange for a well-known and very talented rug hooking teacher to start a bi-weekly class in the Santa Clarita Valley. Think of the rugs and wall hangings you will create under the tutelage of someone who knows everything about this great, great art! I fervently hope you will join me in this adventure.
On another note, since I began rug hooking, I have met and made friends with some of the most incredible people I've ever known. Rug hookers are the friendliest, most helpful, most generous folks. Not only that...they know how to have a good time while learning all they can to further their craft. I know you will feel the same if you join us.
True story:
Three female friends of mine (all in their late seventies) were driving from a rug hooking event they had attended in Houston. They stopped to gas up at a country station and the attendant, a young man in cowboy boots, jeans, a T-Shirt, and cowboy hat, asked them where they were headed. The women replied that they were going home to California after having attended a (rug) hooker’s convention in Houston. The young man’s eyes bulged out of his head and he said, “Y’all have conventions?” The women…straight faced…simply said, “Oh yes.” Now, remember, these gals were in their ‘70s. The young man said…are you ready? ”Wow, I shore wish I had some money.” The women’s’ laughter fueled them all the way back to California.
